As of recent, we have designed newer, better products that are continually shaping what seems to be the future of technology. One prime example of technological development is the virtual reality headset, which can take you to a whole new separate world. With virtual reality, it takes you somewhere you have never been before where you feel like you are inside of a game whether it be in sports, real-life situations or post-apocalyptic fantasies the possibilities are endless with what you can experience in virtual reality. However, the concern with virtual reality is that when playing violent video games desensitization is amplified by ten.
Virtual Reality for games like Call of Duty and Halo may feel a bit too intense for some players especially those who have served in the military and went to war where in that instance a disorder like Post-Traumatic Stress could be triggered. Even I must admit that this may be a step in the wrong direction when it comes to video games in general because anything associated with real life death and destruction is bad news. For example, The Oculus Rift headset, which went on sale in March, has already inspired independent developers to design a controversial game-like simulation of the 9/11 attacks for the platform, putting users into the perspective of someone inside the World Trade Center’s north tower, complete with the experience of jumping to one’s death. When it comes to the mental problems of those who have been through traumatic events like 9/11, this may definitely be the wrong decision.
Mental problems can rage from mild to extreme where the reactions to the actions of terrorist attacks or war could trigger an unwanted dangerous reaction. With the effects of war and destruction, only certain individuals who have been on the forefront of that war know what it is like to deal with constant death all around them. Mental problems come from not just war, but physical and emotional abuse as well, which leads those affected to be mentally unstable. When it comes to mental disorders we should take precaution because that goes outside the boundaries of what violent video games can do to a person, potentially leading a person down a path they can not come back from.
