Where there are anti-social effects among some individuals, there are pro-social effects among other individuals. With violent video games, the creators of violent video games initial goal is to have a pro-social effect and outcome for those that play their game. For example, an experiment done conducted on certain groups of people said, Participants who played a violent game in which the violence had an explicitly pro-social motive were found to show lower short-term aggression and show higher levels of pro-social cognition than individuals who played a violent game in which the violence was motivated by more morally ambiguous motives. Besides the pro-social outcomes linked to violence, there are also other pro-social outcomes linked to more positive ideas.
Pro-social outcomes with an even more positive outcome involve players interacting, talking and playing with one another within the game. Instead of playing by yourself where you are isolated from anyone and everyone which is one of the main reasons that older people tend to blame violent video games for people like this, you can communicate with other players which has no doubt a more pro-social outcome for those players. Playing with other players also increases your social skills in game and for some people helps cross the threshold of effectively talking to people in real life. Making sure you have people to talk to and people to trust in game can go a long way when it comes to increasing the pro-social behavior exhibited by violent video game players.
With there being pro-social effects and anti-social effects in certain individuals people continue to worry about the potential negatives outcomes among certain violent video game players despite some of the pro-social outcomes. People continue to believe there are detrimental effects that violent video games have on people and will lead them to kill other people in real life. Based on the experimental results of pro-social and anti-social behavior, it should be encouraging to think that game programmers who focus on cultivating pro-social mindsets may be able to continue entertaining young video game players, while also protecting the public from potentially detrimental effects and possibly even benefiting society by fostering pro-social thoughts among today’s teens and young adults. Older folks must focus on there being another reason for mass violence in the U.S. because even though there may be signs that point to violent video games leading to criminal violence, it should not be the only answer.
